Kristine Stilesis an art historian specializing in global contemporary art. She has written extensively on performance art as well as on the themes of destruction, violence, and trauma in art.[1] Stiles earned a B.A. in Art History from San Jose State University in California, and an M.A. and Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley.[2] Stiles joined the faculty of Duke University in 1988, where she is currently the France Family Professor of Art, Art History & Visual Studies.[3] Stiles' accomplishments as an educator were honored with the Richard K. Lublin Distinguished Award for Teaching Excellence at Duke University in 1994.[4] She has also taught at the University of Bucharest and Venice International University.[5]
Stiles has received numerous professional awards, such as the J. William Fulbright Fellowship (1995) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Fellowship (2000)[6] , as well as an honorary doctorate from Dartington College of Arts in England.[7]
